Many athletes today are not even prepared to win one championship, let alone, being prepared to master their sport. It appears that today’s top athletes don’t seem to really care about winning as much as in the past. We have mass media driven propaganda to thank for this.
This media programming seems to be the catalyst that creates major sports dilution, in the athletes and the actual sport itself. In other words, athletes and sports in general today appear to have become watered down.
There doesn’t seem to be a lot of substance left in sports today only sizzle. The conditioning and mental programming from the media seems to be at the root of all this. Remember the days when the top athletes played the game out of love or played to win solely on principle. In the past, you could always count on certain players and teams to be in the hunt for the championship. Lakers and Celtics of old, Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Chicago Bears, Jimmy Connors and Martina Navratilova, Carl Lewis, the list goes on and on.
How many so-called “top, superstar athletes” today lose year after year? We could name many. Maybe an even better question is; how many “superstar athletes” lose year after year, and are still splattered all over the television as if they are true champions?
It seems commonplace now for our “superstar athletes” to go home after a tough loss and then be seen partying later on that night as if they actually won their event! It makes us wonder, where have all the true champions gone? They may win an occasional game, tournament or event here or there but certainly not consistently. Now, I’m not against an athlete getting paid handsomely for their worth but it seems that huge endorsements, player contracts and the pop culture mindset help fuel this apathetic mindset.
